In a vacuum... sure
In reality you can't remove emotion from a thing that was only kept alive because of emotion
There is a dismissive attitude towards the people who thanklessly worked on and for an ecosystem. So... no... you don't get to just "us vs them" the crowd and then get to build what some consider the Death Star without opposition. Which is why splitting the community doesn't fix it.
Running Counterparty is a mostly unprofitable thankless job where you never seem to make everyone happy without accidentally pissing someone off.
Whoever sits in that chair needs to love it a little... and that means seeing neighbors not customers/users -
IMO founder-less Counterparty put everyone in the same level. And the developers, or at least speaking for myself, were respectful of the software, and there was a slow and steady approach to upgrades (I would have been even more conservative btw).
When the founder returned, he could only see the flaws. For him it was old ugly software, which needed to be rebuild.
I can understand both perspectives.
But IMO, for a relic that was still alive even with minor developments, speaks for itself. With the recent amount of big continuous changes… where is “the relic” now? (It’s actually still there if you just don’t upgrade…)
Then there is the ego, this only works if a single person is the top authority. See the github page, Adam put himself alone there.
And I believe many non-technical users actually prefer this. But at this point, then is just being a customer with an account at a private company. There is nothing special in this imo. -

Gotta love the spirit of collaboration n community here🤷🏻♂️😜 at least they’re letting their asses show and clearly saying that they don’t wanna hold off on their latest release because it were required doing more testing….. and showing their dictatorial tactics by personally attacking anyone who raises objections to their implementation or views on the best path forward.
Mucho teamwork🤷🏻♂️🙄 -

yes you read the code correctly... forced updates to the latest version seems to be the way they are getting people to stay on their version... if you dont play ball and run their version, your version no longer continues working... so much for choosing to upgrade because you believe in the features that are being added.... now if you dont update, your node stops parsing.

and looks like p2sh is fully disabled now... even tho p2sh works perfectly fine in the latest versions of bitcoincore... Adam was just too lazy to spend the time making sure that the p2sh parsing continued working..... Javier and I were able to generate p2sh MPMA send txs on bitcoin core 28.1 a few months ago using counterparty-classic and it all parsed fine.... so, the whole "gotta disable p2SH encoding cuz bitcoin core made a change" is a false argument.... yet another case of the devs not wanting to take the time to move slow and methodically and make sure that they dont break things before rushing forward with changes that break stuff... Fast and lose code changes seems to be the name of the game

@BrrrGuy I keep flip-flopping about if you’re right or not on a few things related to counterparty and I keep cutting you slack; but some of your buddies really suck.
You guys scream injustice and censorship but kick and ban people just the same or worse. Get your friends inline or I’m definitely not on your side regardless of what you do. You are the company you keep - 04 June 2025 (18 messages)

Not sure who your speaking of... but I am not aware of any kicking or banning in the Counterparty channels in the past few weeks... and sorry man, there is no big coordinated effort between any of us, just a random group of ppl speaking their minds... Glad to hear that your on the fence and keeping an open mind, but hate to break it to ya, but your grouping ppl that have similar views as me all together as "my buddies"...
-
and FYI... I dont feel I scream anything... I simply make ppl aware of waht is going on in the background, as much of the stuff taht is taking place is quietly taking place in the background without the community being aware... sorry if me voicing my opinion loudly and often equates to screaming... i'm not really upset about things and getting emotional, simply speaking my mind occasionally about things that bother me.... as are others in the space.
-
Try ignoring what I say, ignoring what ppl who you consider my "buddies" are saying, and listen to the other voices and see what they are saying.... lots of differing voices and opinions, but I think you will detect a general pattern and theme between most of the voices if you just ignore the loudest and most extreme views.... Talk with JP Jansen, Shaban, Kane, etc.. all very logical and rational people who share many of my views... as always, form your own opinion, but dont discredit what I say simply because I speak up the loudest, and please dont group people together based on your views on if we are "buddies" or not.... evaluate each person on their own voice and merits 🙂

Hell yea! Kill switch is real!
I updated config.py to point to a custom json url with an activation block in the past. This is what will happen with everyone at block 902,000. -
-
I try to dig into history here.
In 2018 checks.py did load a json, checked for version and killed the node if not updated.
So it appears not be some new conspiracy. Just an old one from the early days 😁 -
Are you planning on not updating to v11 and waiting for the reverse compatibility update before you update?
-
I’m not talking about JP, Shaban, Kane or other good people. I believe I invited two of those three into this chat. I can tell the good guys from the bad. I recognize patterns and see who the honest, genuine and good people are and are not.
I’m torn on if you organically turned over counterparty or if you were tapped on the shoulder. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone got Fang Fanged, compromised or honeypotted. It’s been obvious for over two years that there is a war against the counterparty software and community. Garret is schitzo about me because I see through his crap. He banned me from his bs channel two years ago when the oracle sided with me and my comments, the day you took xchain down and the etf was announced, damn that oracle loves me. Garret banned me from a scientist chat that I should be allowed in due to me holding the card, so he can enjoy Joe kicking him just the same. Garret talked shit to other admins calling me a ‘fed’ and getting me banned there too. Garret banned me after objecting to your shitty porn memes in the ‘fake official’ counterparty chat yesterday. Something about the west coast mentality is way off. Every California boy should be forced to travel outside of Cali where liberal laws don’t protect pussies and fucked up logic. I first found counterparty because of sog back in the day but I’m not here for the art or frens. I came back to counterparty because of what the surface web documents claimed counterparty to be, boy was that shit a lie. I tried being friendly with both of you, what a waste of time. Shame is new devs will use six syllables to call testers idiots, so not much better on the other side. Enjoy your echo chamber channel moderated by a non-technical boomer. -
I can firmly say I’m here for the art and I hope the fancy techie mechaniziums wizardry keeps flopping along so can make more !!
-
-
yikes... kinda harsh evaluation I think... me handing back control of counterparty was part me being overwelmed of doing it on my own for so long and I was eager to share the burden of development with other devs, and the co-founders returning seemed like a great opp to move things forward..... but, there were signs very early on and warnings from ppl about what would be coming... I choose to believe in the co-founders and put them up on a pedestal... I should have been way more critical of them returning... but I had faith and so I handed over control of the properties willingly..... it is only after they had full control of the properties that their true intentions became clear and the centralization and forcing of features started to happen.

As you suggested that I do above… I do ‘detect a general pattern and theme’ but among people from Cali. I’ve been a few times. Huntington Beach, Anaheim, LA area for business. I’ve schooled and worked with Californians. I’ve done business with Californians. I’ve done business with businesses that are in California (those businesses eventually fled for good reason)
If I could simplify the general perception from anyone in the other 49 states is that California is the whiny kid that has their mom ruin the party for everyone.
No offense intended, blame Pelosi, Feinstein, Schiff, Brown, Arnold, Newscum and the older Californians who put them in power -

Calling out people for their geographic location .. that is a new low.
One of the things I love about Counterparty is that we are a truly global community. No one cares where you are from. Let your art, code, whatever you do with/for Counterparty speak for itself. -
I’m a big fan of your technical work JP. I’m calling out two people for their morals, values, actions and behavior in the Counterparty community. There just happens to be a common geographical theme. I’m not ignorant enough to genuinely believe that all Californians are in that group but stereotypes exist for a reason and the only two individuals I am speaking of are both from that location. Not you too?!?, sorry. I don’t care where people are from, what gender, age, height, weight, religion or color. I let their actions speak and I’ve been listening. I’m not offended when I fit a stereotype. What have these two done for Counterparty lately? Net positive? Thats a difficult to quantify subjective question. I say net negative. These aren’t personal attacks, if you missed the context for this exchange, Gmoney kicked me from the ‘official’ counterparty chat after I requested Jeremy quit posting porn in the ‘official’ counterparty chat. Do you support porn memes in the official counterparty chat? Do you endorse kicking and banning people for objecting to obscenity?

Just to clarify who you’re “calling out”… it is me and GMoney yes?
A few messages ago you were talking about flip-flopping on if I was right about some things with counterparty and cutting me slack but now, if I’m reading your responses correctly, I’m one of the people you’re calling out as I live in California and have a strong opinions on counterparty.
You’re entitled to your opinion, but it’s strange behavior to me to tell me you’re cutting me slack and possibly seeing that I was right in some areas and then a few messages later flip it around and go back on the attack… but to each their own brother🤷🏻♂️😜 -

-
Be sure to stay out of the douche potty room then cause we have full on tower and hot girl meme competitions in there on the regular…. The girl post some of the most explicit ones….. and not a single person seems to complain…. I’m guessing the complaints are because the counterparty environment is so politically charged and toxic that any actions are put under extra scrutiny.
I’m not familiar with why GMoney kicked anyone…. But we should be abiding by the content guidelines that are pinned in the channel…. Where users are given a warning first and if the offensive behavior continues, then they get a timeout. -
Why does his opinion matter ?

He’s been around a few years…. Was interacting with me and others in the counterparty space before Adam came back…. He’s generally supportive of Adam and not really a big fan of mine because I’m loud and outspoken and stand on business when necessary.
-
Ah I see haha
I carefully read all the messages and came up with -
I think a few years ago when Juan and I were really getting into it is when blue appeared and that’s generally how he formed his opinion of me… based on how I was treating Juan and Duncan…. Which in hindsight could’ve been a little bit nicer…. But at the time the whole weight of counterparty and changes and running everything and keeping everyone happy was on me, so i would to lash out at times… due to the overwhelming stress and lack of support
But I never banned Juan or Duncan from sharing their opinion in the counterparty repositories like Adam has … and I would generally respond to every comment that Juan posted even if I disagree with it… conversations and discourse make the community stronger…. Censorship and echo chambers make the community weaker.
Side-note: I never imagined Juan and I would be on the same side of our views on counterparty… but time heals all wounds and I’m happy to say Juan and I are on good terms and I have nothing but respect for him, even if I occasionally disagree with some of his opinions -
I was trying to get my point across to you in that first ‘flipflop’ comment without having to air so much dirty laundry, but it ends up I had to spell it out anyway. At least now more people know

Where is the discussion?
Great question. One would hope there was one before hand, but that is not the order we have been seeing. -
I'm quite familiar with the idea of ultimate free speech in an adult room. However a protocol discussion room is not the same. In order to retain professionalism the content posted should be suitable for a workplace or a family environment. That is simply common decency. The right place and time, you know?
That being said. I see nothing wrong with having one professional room, and another that is mostly an uncensored trollbox. As a community, we need both venues imho -

The recent changes by Unspendable Labs complicated the protocol a lot, making it much costly to run a node. The syncing was “improved”, but is mainly because is no longer parsing block by block tx by tx, these are now hardcoded. See example: https://github.com/CounterpartyXCP/counterparty-core/blob/master/counterparty-core/counterpartycore/lib/messages/rps.py
Counterparty is an interesting project, but imo it was much cooler before the founders takeover attitude.
The TRUTH is it only “works” if nobody questions anything and blindly trust the balance an authority tells you.
I can understand the “weight” these balances make to its owners, forcing users to follow along… but I’m not interested in this. At all.

This isn't the fuck off room.
This is the fucked up room.🤣 -
What does the betting module have to do with hardcoding? I haven’t seen any hardcoded exceptions to change onchain data.
Curious what is costing more for resources. I was able to drastically reduce the ebs volume size and drop to a medium instance on aws saving tons without addrindexrs on two nodes. -
The example was given to show that the claims to parsing speed improvements have less to do with their huge (arguably unnecessary) refactoring, than to simply skipping full block parsing. Imo the claim is mainly for marketing, ignoring the tradeoffs done.
If you are using a third party for address balances, then the overall resources are reduced. But I’m still running my own address indexing (with electrs), appropriately decoupled (also having the Bitcoin node separate).
Unspendable’s counterparty-core database is no longer a single SQLite db. It now involves multiple dbs, which total more file size than previously. -
Yea i noticed that too. RPC (rock paper scissors from 2014) are not parsed properly, collected from csv.
Is this is a recent "optimization" ? -
Skipping block parsing outside of the bootstrap in a full parse you mean? I didn’t notice evidence of that, but the rust parser is fkn sweet. Started doing the same for stamps and it’s at least 20-50x speed improvement from python
-
Yeah is not all bad. And for stamps, even better having the founder working for you now lol

You’re still using Amazon Aws instances instead of dedicated hardware? Back when you were spinning stamps up and you were complaining about a $16,000 Amazon bill, I had mentioned that you should use dedicated hardware and find cheaper solutions like ovh.com and that Amazon is drastically overpriced….
You can get a 32 core machine with 5 TB of SATA and one terabyte of nvme with 64 gb of ram for around $200/mo…
I’m not sure what exactly you’re doing. That would require more CPU disk space and memory than that…. Token scan runs on three Web servers and one MySQL master server and is able to handle 50 to 60M API requests per month… for about 1000 bucks a month I have a handful of servers to use and way more CPU space and memories. Space then I can utilize….. once again strongly suggest that you look into dedicated servers and ovh.com… again I’m not sure what you’re backing infrastructure looks like or how often you’re doing passing, but I don’t see anyway that you would use more resources than I am with stamps….. I run everything for dogeparty, counterparty, free wallet, token scan, etc and my monthly operational cost are nowhere near what it would be if I was using Amazon -

Been trying to break down what's going on with v11.
The good part: taproot encoding. It's efficient, especially for large messages. Do not confuse it with ordinals.
CBOR. This is where it's getting weird. It is sold in as a more modern solution but it is also less efficient and breaks cntrprty messages. Now the real reason is this: It makes counterparty collide with ordinals!
Everytime you issue a token or broadcast a text, an ordinal will get minted.
This ordinal will not even be compatible with counterparty (unlike utxo attach/detach introduced in v10).
It will be possible to opt out ( im not sure from v11.0 or v11.1 ) but ordinal minting is the default behavior. -
I was wondering ?
Because all my issueances seem to be marked as utxo attached in horizon ?
Thought maybe that was because they attached for initial issuance
But seems to be stuck ? Like an ordinal ?
Hmm way over my head haha -
Here have a look I click on utxo attached
And issuances show up ? So does that mean they always are or just during issuance time - 13 June 2025 (6 messages)

hrm... so loudly on github tell us we are wrong and that CBOR is required and that it will take too long to do testing and that they will add reverse compatability in the future and that it isn't a big deal.... then quietly add reverse compatibility to a release before protocol activation.... glad that they did the right thing... but would be even better if they would just admit they made a mistake and say that they were going to do this rather than all the grandstanding about it being unreasonable to put out a second release and expect ppl to update to that second release before protocol activation.... when that is EXACTLY what they wind up doing

Afaik CBOR is necessary to make Counterparty collide with Ordinals. Ie an ordinal is minted when you issue Counterparty tokens, broadcast a text, do a fairmint... weird thing to do.

Dumb guy question
What the hell is CBOR ? Hahaha -
Like json, but not human readable
-
-
Legacy encoding uses mostly fixed width fields.
Most fields are straightforward hex<->number or hex<->ascii. A few fields are custom. Some are not fixed width but use the first two byte(s) to signal length.
The beauty of this is that you can look at a raw bitcoin transaction and decode the message.
Is Counterparty CBOR encoding documented? Does it bring any advantages beyond compatibility with ordinals? -
Anyone see the DUALPEPE

It's a GIF, embedded in the description field in hexadecimal

Aaah so cool
It didn’t show in token scan
Just garbled info lol 😂 -

Is it yours ?
-
nope, I'm assuming the dual naka is similar, didn't look

I believe with CBOR you are able to specify mime type, whereas with the legacy type text is assumed.
Im not able to look into it now but i guess DUALPEPE had an ordinal minted in the same issuance transaction ? -

like clockwork... run out of funds... go back to the VC and ask for more funds... this time raised $1.5M yesterday.... but of course, no mention of this by Adam and team (just like there was no mention of it in the first place until I called it out... which was what made adam rage-quit this channel... being held accountable), or of the conflict of interest of having a VC-backed for-profit company in charge of a supposedly "decentralized community driven" protocol....
-
So much for the whole "They are doing all this dev work for free" nonsense that Xcer seems to try and push... nope, they getting paid, and clearly the VC funds are driving the counterparty development, and not the community... could have had open source PSBT where anyone could create and store PSBT without having to pay a $2 per listing fee like Horizon charges... but nope, why build something in a free open way that benefits everyone when you can build walled gardens and charge for access.... shame shame 😛
-
-
Which is fine but Core Devs have a conflict of interest against current tooling that supports an overwhelming majority of the community. So intentionally making things harder for competing wallets banning other devs does not seem in the best interest of the community.
-
-
So there are two different potential conflicts of interest that I (Adam) see. The first is the possibility of supporting Unspendable Labs' business over the interests of the community (e.g. Horizon Wallet + Explorer over other wallets and explorers). The second is that the entities funding the company Unspendable Labs could push the protocol development in a way that favors their own interests.
The second question is easy to answer: the existing funding for UL comes 100% from (1) myself, (2) the Bitcoin Frontier Fund (who have made their investment public), and (3) close friends and family (whose names I won't disclose)
The first question is harder to answer. Yes, there's a potential conflict of interest. It's possible that I personally could push to change the protocol in a way that favors the UL business. That's possible in any case where someone who leads development of a community project also runs a business that makes use of that project. All I can really say here that UL and I are much more incentivized to make Counterparty successful than to increase UL's short-term revenue. That's why 100% of Counterparty development is done out in the open, including all issue tracking and prioritization, and why Horizon Wallet is fully open-source. -
Just for historical reference.... Adam said that 100% of the UL funding comes from himself and close friends and family.... that was back last year when they first started up.... now it seems that is no longer the case as they just took on 1.5M of funds from additional investors... just passing along the info which is not being shared about UL funding and its motivations driving counterparty development... and one wonders why I was screaming for transparency and about conflict of interest last year 🤷️️️️️️

The PSBT rollout choice was so dumb
Because of that token subscription thing no one cared and kept using "scary" dispensers
Terrible unraveling of the feature and no communication nor cooperation with existing wallet devs on it... Also know Kevin was mad about the non open source nature of the data too.... Strayed so far away from the base XCP philosophy of xcpDEX, dispensers and even BTCpay for that matter
We were all so excited for it too.... Excited to be on ME .... Lol -
Isn’t anyone else able to implement psbts, but nobody has bothered yet?
-
-
firemints dot XYZ has em - also RPW integrated them
-

-
None of the data is "shared" until the PSBT gets picked up and fufilled
So contrary to ETH markets where I can bid on OS and see the bid on chain on ME (and all other marketplaces)
Currently the PSBT setup means if you set up a buy order on firemints and it doesn't get matched. It will NEVER show on horizon
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this was my understanding when I asked -

I changed the prefix in counterparty classic because Adam and team refused to add replay protection and their fork…. They would prefer that users continue using the longer and more expensive original message than XCP

One can only wonder what would have happened if you stayed in v9…

Discussing the history and future of Counterparty with Adam Krellenstein
Interesting discussion with Counterparty co-founder Adam Krellenstein. Counterparty is one of the first tokenization platforms created on bitcoin, releasing on mainnet in 2014 and has been kept running continuously throughout the years through community efforts. Counterparty hosts some of the earliest and most significant NFT collections. In 2015, one of the first NFT integrated games, Spells of Genesis was announced and released the first playable game card, FDCARD. In 2016, the Rare Pepe project was lauched, creating the first community curated crypto art project, with an incredible range of cards over 3 years. That spirit continues today, with projects like Fake Rares and Dank Directory. We discuss Adam's introduction to crypto, the inspiration, vision, and creation of XCP, his experience in the first year of XCP operation, his decision to leave the project, and his recent return, and more. Nothing much different than what happened now…. Community would still be divided. I would still be called out as a toxic developer by the core devs (UL employees) and they would march forward with their improvements….. what matters most to them is being in control of the protocol and being able to showcase to investors that they can do whatever they want with the protocol😢
Me staying on V9 would not have changed that …. And essentially counterparty classic is v9…. The only difference is the prefix is changed from CNTPRTY to XCP -
If I was just doing things for myself, I would’ve stayed on V9 not done counterparty classic and let things play out…. But considering the majority of the ecosystem uses tokenscan and freewallet to interact with counterparty, I didn’t feel it was appropriate for me to have a personal battle where users were stuck in the middle and confused as to what counterparty actually was…. I feel I’ve always been here for the users and done what I feel is best for them, and even though I knew that forking to counterparty classic would most likely result in not much usage at all, I felt that was the more appropriate route rather than creating further confusion by having two things both called counterparty and users unaware of what ledger they were doing things on…
In hindsight, I think if I would’ve left the prefix alone for another couple months, Adam and team would’ve eventually caved and changed the prefix …. But like I said, I can’t play with other peoples money….. my moral compass tells me that that’s the wrong move… it would keep me up at nights worrying, and I feel the better path forward was for me to focus on building something better than counterparty rather than continuing to fight. -
Thanks for the share… ZeroG said he tried to do his best to ask questions that were critical of some of the Adam’s decisions while also keeping the interview friendly…. I don’t normally listen to Adam’s dribble, but considering this is zeroG doing the interview, I’ll give it a listen.
