After ranting about this the other night I went looking for more info about Ralph E.W Earl and found a few interesting tidbits. As a portrait artist he was tasked with painting the heros of The Battle of New Orleans which led him to meet Andrew Jackson at The First Hermitage in Nashville. He fell in love with Jackson's niece who subsequently died in childbirth. He and Jackson became best friends and Earl would stay with Jackson through 3 Presidential runs 2 of which were successful. Earl painted many many portraits of Jackson, his family, and others who visited Jackson in Nashville then Washington. Earl also helped design the second hermitage. It was during these 3 presidential campaigns where I found relevancy. Jackson was viciously attacked by cartoonists of the day but Earl was able to defend Jackson and massively affect the sentiment towards him by assembling a team of artists to create mass produced, positive propaganda. Prints of Jackson's portraits or cartoons defending him and showing his virtues. He never left Jackson's side and died at the hermitage 1 year after leaving Washington. There is much more about him I wont put here but, the more you read about this guy the more you realize he played the same role Dan the man has filled for President Trump over the years. I think it's relevant as to why one of his portraits would not be used on the 20 dollar bill and to why Trump would choose his portrait to hang left of the resolute desk in the oval office.
