Gm, does anyone have trouble with getting the dispenser list to work on Freewallet? What's the best tech to use for dispensers these days
-
Dispenser list in FreeWallet seems to work here
Other options to get a dispenser list sorted by price are xcp.io and Horizon explorer:
https://horizon.market/explorer/assets/XCP/dispensers?filter=status%3Aopen&sort=price%3Aasc&mode=buy
https://www.xcp.io/asset/XCP?view=dispensers&status=open&page=1XCP Asset Info - XCP.ioView details for Counterparty asset XCP
-
(these links are for XCP)
-
Freewallet has btc dispensers for example. I'll check out Horizon though thanks
-
To buy from dispensers, popular options are FreeWallet or Horizon wallet
-
Just to clarify, dispensers (including the above) always work with btc
Send BTC to the dispenser, receive XCP (or whatever asset you are purchasing) -
Yeah, I've successfully bought and sold from btc dispensers through Freewallet in the past (and XCP/PEPECASH on the rarepepewallet/rpw UI's)

If needed, this is the support chat for Horizon wallet and explorer:

It's a metaprotocol on top of bitcoin. It's _not_ a sidechain.
See https://docs.counterparty.io/docs/basics/what-is-counterparty/ -
The Counterparty protocol is a platform built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain that enables the creation and trading of custom digital assets, tokens, and smart contracts. It extends Bitcoin’s functionality by embedding additional data into Bitcoin transactions, allowing users to issue their own assets (like tokens or collectibles), create decentralized applications, and execute peer-to-peer financial agreements without relying on a separate blockchain.
Counterparty uses Bitcoin’s security and infrastructure while adding features like user-defined tokens, decentralized exchanges, and smart contract capabilities. Its native token, XCP, was created in 2014 through a "proof-of-burn" process where users destroyed bitcoins to receive XCP, giving it a fixed supply. It’s often compared to Ethereum for its smart contract features, but it remains tightly integrated with Bitcoin. -
-
-
-
-
-
Xcp is used to create assets
-
-
Xcp is used to gas transactions
-
-
So this is ultimately to protect bloat/spam for node operators
-
Yes it's anti spam mechanism to limit mass asset creation
-
You want to create an asset on btc blockchain you need to pay a fee to create the asset via xcp
-
-
You can create numerical assets for free but to create named assets on btc you need xcp
-
Yes 2.6 mill xcp created by burning btc for proof of burn.
-
No more emissions
-
But yes burning for asset creation makes xcp deflaitionary
-
Xcp is access to named assets stored in btc blockchain plus way more
-
So there is a limit on some of the functionality of the protocol
-
-
The plan is to make a dynamic fee so as usage increases and coins become unavailable fees will change
-
Xcp has eight decimal points just like BTC
-
gm, where's the best place to create dispensers atm
-
Maybe in 50000 years :)
-
-
wdym by best "place"?
popular wallets: freewallet and horizon
popular explorers: tokenscan.io, horizon.market/explorer and xcp.io -
Yes dev has a proposal for dynamic fees.
-
-
I’ve been burning 🔥 lol
Love issueing trying to catch important events
That will be cool to look at in -10-15-20 years haha -
Named asset equals .5 xcp
Subasset .25
Sweep address requires xcp -
The XCP disappears by its magic

It's still enabled! People just don't use it. I frankly haven't looked into why. Would be curious to hear people's thoughts. There's actually an open issue to disable it in the protocol at some point in the future, but there's no particularly good justification for doing that either.

Prediction markets (such as Polymarket) could be a huge use case:
https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2024/11/09/infofinance.html -
"From prediction markets to info finance"
2024 Nov 09
"One of the Ethereum applications that has always excited me the most are prediction markets. I wrote about futarchy, a model of prediction-based governance conceived by Robin Hanson, in 2014. I was an active user and supporter of Augur back in 2015 (look, mommy, my name is in the Wikipedia article!). I earned $58,000 betting on the election in 2020. And this year, I have been a close supporter and follower of Polymarket.
To many people, prediction markets are about betting on elections, and betting on elections is gambling - nice if it helps people enjoy themselves, but fundamentally not more interesting than buying random coins on pump.fun. From this perspective, my interest in prediction markets may seem confusing. And so in this post I aim to explain what it is about the concept that excites me. In short, I believe that (i) prediction markets even as they exist today are a very useful tool for the world, but furthermore (ii) prediction markets are only one example of a much larger incredibly powerful category, with potential to create better implementations of social media, science, news, governance, and other fields. I shall label this category "info finance"." -

S16 E14: Adam Krellenstein on Counterparty & Bitcoin Tokens
Adam Krellenstein is one of the founders of Counterparty – a protocol that launched on Bitcoin in January of 2014, with the purpose of making it easy to create tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain. Originally, Counterparty was meant to bring real world assets (stocks, commodities, company shares) to Bitcoin – but the most popular use case turned out to be art via Rare Pepes, Spells of Genesis, and Bitcoin Heads. In this episode, we talk about Counterparty's continued existence, its relevance in the era of Solana and Ethereum, and more! This 1,000% I’ve been saying this for a long time.
A problem getting the point across was that the Stamps ‘protocol’ conversations muddied the waters and non-tech people don’t understand the difference in a protocol and a collection. Stamps started as a collection and morphed into a sidechain of a sidechain. The later stamps stuff is/was great. Too bad that the clash of heads of recent times created division amongst devs and power users. If xcp, stamps, src-20 and btns were all rolled into one, we would have a killer protocol. Each has strong points to bring to the table. Stamps were not the first to encode data in description, just the first with traction and marketing. Jpj, Data & art on-chain and a few others were the pioneers. Most vitriol over stamps was that they used free numbered assets, instead of paid named assets. Complainers missed the point.
Encoding in P2SH is my preference for immutability, if that is a concern, even with the slight hit to cost. -

I thought ordinals and inscriptions were two separate things.

The ordinal is what represents ownership of the inscription but they are completely detached from one another IMO

I think you can inscribe something on a ordinal sat like a "rare" sat for example but making inscriptions doesn't require using the ordinal serial number system the way I understand it.
I'm just starting to learn about it though so I have zero experience actually doing the stuff. -
You’re not inscribing anything on Sats as Sats are just an abstraction. The art data gets encoded into the witness data and through social consensus we all agree that a particular UTXO represents ownership of the inscribed art.

It's a bit sad to see the price going down endlessly.
Perhaps, if people no longer want their XCP, we should set up some kind of donation box where people can just dump them and artists can pick them up to experiment with.
Is it possible to set up a dispenser (faucet?) address where people can donate the XCP they no longer need, and anyone who wants 1 or 2 XCP to play with can get a dispense of just 1 per day so that no one comes in and just grabs them all? -
I hope that the devs/maintainers can also appreciate that in a market where it is only possible to place standing orders to sell XCP (either dispensers or atomic swaps), we have a sell only order book and that will inevitably exert downward pressure on the price of XCP, which then leads people to wonder if the project is some sort of danger.

Seems like great speculation to buy some TORN. Anyone know where to buy it without getting raped by the bid/ask spread? -
It's pretty much the same in most financial markets.
If a buyer sees only sellers, he is likely to hold back on buying until the sell orders thin out and there is a balance between buyers and sellers.
If you go to look at buying a house in a particular neighborhood, and you see a large number of sell offers but no news of anyone try to buy, would you consider buying at that moment, or waiting until the buy/sell pressure evens out?
The current "sell only" trading environment for XCP does not instill confidence in buyers/holders. -

The same way all roads lead back to btc, when those roads start converging, that's when the OG protocol really takes flight.
When the real estate market takes a turn for the worst, I'd imagine the real estate giants turning to bitcoin, and its OG protocol -
Market cap says under 20m, but the reality is, the amt of btc burned (its value) is part of the marketcap unaccounted for at first glance

lmao since bitcoin is virtual, it relies even more on its real world grounding. it's just trying to sweep that under the rug.

hmm, i think there could still be a counterparty based inscription protocol that uses witness data like ordinals does

You can literally do that right now using ORD: protocol.

with counterparty assets?

if done with ordinals, wouldn't that create 2 assets?

Data stored on bitcoin can be leveraged by ALL bitcoin NFTs including Counterparty. To attach your ordinal inscription to your Counterparty asset, head over to https://t.co/nMVZZ3cOCx and update your asset description. https://t.co/ErTcJCfbAX

Great idea but maybe a simpler / more practical explanation of the game would help
Also, what happens if I buy a mint ticket and they don't sell out? Does the race never start? -
Amazing stuff.
-
Does having the rarest or most minted race card necessarily mean you'll win the race?
-
-
No, each dispenser is its own race.
The lower the supply, the lower number of possible race participants (competition). -
For instance, this race has 21 max racers, and these prizes are live on the DEX now for a RACETEN token.
The RACETEN token becomes available on the DEX for the Mint token after the mint sells out and the block delay completes. -
The race would never start if it doesn’t sell out.
I will come up with a solution, likely a dividend in XCP returned to buyers I’m thinking. -
i think the full fair minting protocol may actually have this feature - a minimum amount of fairmints that need to be reached in order to release the fairmint, with the xcp dividend paid to the fairminter refunded if it’s not reached
-
its escrowed until the minimum is reached
-
is the above correct @teysol?
-
yep there's the "soft cap" feature. there are some barebones docs here: https://docs.counterparty.io/docs/advanced/specifications/fairminter/Fair Minting | Counterparty
Fair Minting is a process whereby users are able to “mint” tokens in a decentralized manner. One user initiates a minter (either with or without a “premint”), and others are able to trigger it to mint tokens for themselves. Fair Minting was likely inspired by the original Counterparty Proof-of-Burn mechanism, by which users sent BTC to an unspendable address and XCP tokens were generated for them.

where can we trade xcp?
-
Hi, these are the most common ways to buy or sell XCP these days:
- Dispensers (using horizon wallet or freewallet.io)
See list of verified dispensers below)
- Atomic swaps (using horizon wallet)
See current listings here:
https://horizon.market/atomic-swaps?asset=XCP&order_by=price_per_unit&order=asc
- OTC (best rates for large amounts)
If you need more info on one of these methods, just ask hereAtomic Swaps - HorizonCounterparty asset marketplace & explorer

I'll be setting up a new OTC chat for XCP soon
