Just to clarify, dispensers (including the above) always work with btc
Send BTC to the dispenser, receive XCP (or whatever asset you are purchasing)
  • Yeah, I've successfully bought and sold from btc dispensers through Freewallet in the past (and XCP/PEPECASH on the rarepepewallet/rpw UI's)

What exactly is counterparty protocol? Is it just software that uses and interacts with Bitcoin? A sidechain? A completely separate chain?
  • @Niftyboss1 #8144 11:13 AM, 17 Mar 2025
It's a metaprotocol on top of bitcoin. It's _not_ a sidechain.

    See https://docs.counterparty.io/docs/basics/what-is-counterparty/
  • The Counterparty protocol is a platform built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain that enables the creation and trading of custom digital assets, tokens, and smart contracts. It extends Bitcoin’s functionality by embedding additional data into Bitcoin transactions, allowing users to issue their own assets (like tokens or collectibles), create decentralized applications, and execute peer-to-peer financial agreements without relying on a separate blockchain.
Counterparty uses Bitcoin’s security and infrastructure while adding features like user-defined tokens, decentralized exchanges, and smart contract capabilities. Its native token, XCP, was created in 2014 through a "proof-of-burn" process where users destroyed bitcoins to receive XCP, giving it a fixed supply. It’s often compared to Ethereum for its smart contract features, but it remains tightly integrated with Bitcoin.

Is xcp basically to act as a currency to pay node operators to process/store counterparty data?
  • @booey88 #8147 11:32 AM, 17 Mar 2025
At this time node operators do not get any reward
  • @RevHodl #8148 11:33 AM, 17 Mar 2025
What is the xcp for thenM
  • @booey88 #8149 11:33 AM, 17 Mar 2025
I think the plan is to make improvements to the protocol so that XCP becomes more useful and meaningful
  • @RevHodl #8150 11:34 AM, 17 Mar 2025
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, so xcp isn't required to utilize the functionality of the protocol?
  • @TitaniumP ↶ Reply to #8148 #8151 11:34 AM, 17 Mar 2025
Xcp is used to create assets
  • @booey88 #8152 11:34 AM, 17 Mar 2025
Some operations require XCP as gas
  • @TitaniumP #8153 11:34 AM, 17 Mar 2025
Xcp is used to gas transactions
  • @booey88 #8154 11:34 AM, 17 Mar 2025
And it's also used to trade NFTs on the Counterparty DEX
  • @RevHodl ↶ Reply to #8153 #8155 11:35 AM, 17 Mar 2025

Yes it's anti spam mechanism to limit mass asset creation
  • @TitaniumP #8157 11:36 AM, 17 Mar 2025
You want to create an asset on btc blockchain you need to pay a fee to create the asset via xcp
  • @RevHodl #8158 11:36 AM, 17 Mar 2025
So xcp is always burned when used for asset creation or gas?
  • @TitaniumP #8159 11:36 AM, 17 Mar 2025
You can create numerical assets for free but to create named assets on btc you need xcp
  • @TitaniumP #8160 11:37 AM, 17 Mar 2025
Yes 2.6 mill xcp created by burning btc for proof of burn.

    No more emissions
  • @TitaniumP #8162 11:38 AM, 17 Mar 2025

  • @TitaniumP #8163 11:38 AM, 17 Mar 2025
Xcp is access to named assets stored in btc blockchain plus way more
  • @RevHodl ↶ Reply to #8162 #8164 11:38 AM, 17 Mar 2025
So there is a limit on some of the functionality of the protocol

Eventually all the xcp will get used up
  • @TitaniumP #8166 11:40 AM, 17 Mar 2025
The plan is to make a dynamic fee so as usage increases and coins become unavailable fees will change
  • @TitaniumP #8167 11:40 AM, 17 Mar 2025
Xcp has eight decimal points just like BTC

  • "From prediction markets to info finance"

    2024 Nov 09

"One of the Ethereum applications that has always excited me the most are prediction markets. I wrote about futarchy, a model of prediction-based governance conceived by Robin Hanson, in 2014. I was an active user and supporter of Augur back in 2015 (look, mommy, my name is in the Wikipedia article!). I earned $58,000 betting on the election in 2020. And this year, I have been a close supporter and follower of Polymarket.

To many people, prediction markets are about betting on elections, and betting on elections is gambling - nice if it helps people enjoy themselves, but fundamentally not more interesting than buying random coins on pump.fun. From this perspective, my interest in prediction markets may seem confusing. And so in this post I aim to explain what it is about the concept that excites me. In short, I believe that (i) prediction markets even as they exist today are a very useful tool for the world, but furthermore (ii) prediction markets are only one example of a much larger incredibly powerful category, with potential to create better implementations of social media, science, news, governance, and other fields. I shall label this category "info finance"."

S16 E14: Adam Krellenstein on Counterparty & Bitcoin Tokens

Adam Krellenstein is one of the founders of Counterparty – a protocol that launched on Bitcoin in January of 2014, with the purpose of making it easy to create tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain. Originally, Counterparty was meant to bring real world assets (stocks, commodities, company shares) to Bitcoin – but the most popular use case turned out to be art via Rare Pepes, Spells of Genesis, and Bitcoin Heads. In this episode, we talk about Counterparty's continued existence, its relevance in the era of Solana and Ethereum, and more! Hey @teysol, when you spoke about CP adding inscription like image storage with CP

Will the asset and image be connected?

One of my issues with ordinals is there is no connection between the ordinal and inscription. It’s arbitrary as you know.
  • @XCERXCP #8237 11:25 PM, 20 Mar 2025
With CP, the image link and asset description are directly connected.

With inscriptions, it’s an arbitrary decision to use x SAT order which means you can’t start at the inscription and work your way backwards to determine which sat owns X inscription

This 1,000% I’ve been saying this for a long time.

A problem getting the point across was that the Stamps ‘protocol’ conversations muddied the waters and non-tech people don’t understand the difference in a protocol and a collection. Stamps started as a collection and morphed into a sidechain of a sidechain. The later stamps stuff is/was great. Too bad that the clash of heads of recent times created division amongst devs and power users. If xcp, stamps, src-20 and btns were all rolled into one, we would have a killer protocol. Each has strong points to bring to the table. Stamps were not the first to encode data in description, just the first with traction and marketing. Jpj, Data & art on-chain and a few others were the pioneers. Most vitriol over stamps was that they used free numbered assets, instead of paid named assets. Complainers missed the point.

Encoding in P2SH is my preference for immutability, if that is a concern, even with the slight hit to cost.
  • @teysol #8245 04:05 PM, 21 Mar 2025
You prefer P2SH to Taproot because of the prunability of the latter?

I think you can inscribe something on a ordinal sat like a "rare" sat for example but making inscriptions doesn't require using the ordinal serial number system the way I understand it.

I'm just starting to learn about it though so I have zero experience actually doing the stuff.
  • You’re not inscribing anything on Sats as Sats are just an abstraction. The art data gets encoded into the witness data and through social consensus we all agree that a particular UTXO represents ownership of the inscribed art.

  • It's a bit sad to see the price going down endlessly.

Perhaps, if people no longer want their XCP, we should set up some kind of donation box where people can just dump them and artists can pick them up to experiment with.

Is it possible to set up a dispenser (faucet?) address where people can donate the XCP they no longer need, and anyone who wants 1 or 2 XCP to play with can get a dispense of just 1 per day so that no one comes in and just grabs them all?
  • I hope that the devs/maintainers can also appreciate that in a market where it is only possible to place standing orders to sell XCP (either dispensers or atomic swaps), we have a sell only order book and that will inevitably exert downward pressure on the price of XCP, which then leads people to wonder if the project is some sort of danger.
  • @booey88 #8277 09:04 AM, 23 Mar 2025
Totally disagree, Counterparty has been around for 10 years and XCP would have gone to zero a long time ago if this were true.

Seems like great speculation to buy some TORN. Anyone know where to buy it without getting raped by the bid/ask spread?
  • It's pretty much the same in most financial markets.

If a buyer sees only sellers, he is likely to hold back on buying until the sell orders thin out and there is a balance between buyers and sellers.

If you go to look at buying a house in a particular neighborhood, and you see a large number of sell offers but no news of anyone try to buy, would you consider buying at that moment, or waiting until the buy/sell pressure evens out?

The current "sell only" trading environment for XCP does not instill confidence in buyers/holders.
  • @booey88 #8282 09:26 AM, 23 Mar 2025
Huh? Real estate is also a sell-only order book, at least in all places I'm familiar with. Only completed sales are (sometimes) publicly available. Just like XCP!
  • People put up buy orders through their brokers

Great idea but maybe a simpler / more practical explanation of the game would help

Also, what happens if I buy a mint ticket and they don't sell out? Does the race never start?
  • Amazing stuff.
  • Does having the rarest or most minted race card necessarily mean you'll win the race?
  • @XCERXCP ↶ Reply to #8382 #8386 12:38 PM, 28 Mar 2025
No, each dispenser is its own race.

The lower the supply, the lower number of possible race participants (competition).
  • @XCERXCP #8387 12:47 PM, 28 Mar 2025
For instance, this race has 21 max racers, and these prizes are live on the DEX now for a RACETEN token.

The RACETEN token becomes available on the DEX for the Mint token after the mint sells out and the block delay completes.
  • @XCERXCP ↶ Reply to #8380 #8390 01:30 PM, 28 Mar 2025
The race would never start if it doesn’t sell out.

  • @vectorconfetti #8391 02:04 PM, 28 Mar 2025
i think the full fair minting protocol may actually have this feature - a minimum amount of fairmints that need to be reached in order to release the fairmint, with the xcp dividend paid to the fairminter refunded if it’s not reached
  • @vectorconfetti #8392 02:05 PM, 28 Mar 2025
its escrowed until the minimum is reached
  • @vectorconfetti #8393 02:06 PM, 28 Mar 2025
    is the above correct @teysol?
  • @teysol #8394 06:34 PM, 28 Mar 2025
yep there's the "soft cap" feature. there are some barebones docs here: https://docs.counterparty.io/docs/advanced/specifications/fairminter/
    Fair Minting | Counterparty

Fair Minting is a process whereby users are able to “mint” tokens in a decentralized manner. One user initiates a minter (either with or without a “premint”), and others are able to trigger it to mint tokens for themselves. Fair Minting was likely inspired by the original Counterparty Proof-of-Burn mechanism, by which users sent BTC to an unspendable address and XCP tokens were generated for them.
