Curation is a big part of it. Provenance is another, along with longevity. The community over corporation thing rings truer for decentralization to many. There's a neat thing called Lindy's Law https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindy_effect which effectively says that the longer something has survived, the longer its potential lifespan. If you look at all the stuff that predates pepe, it's mostly dead (namecoin 'nfts' being re-registered don't make me feel confident) and corporate. I don't see nearly the kind of community around SoG and other early corporate nft products that I do here.
All of those give rare pepes a rock solid foundation from which other incentive structures have risen. We see speculators realizing how information asymmetry and the social grind can achieve outsized profits versus following the crowd - 1700 pepes means there is a lot of hidden gems, underappreciated cards, and room for doing bespoke technical analysis on niche assets. In short, it's fun. The project spanned multiple years, with a bull market in between - there's a stratification of card prices where pretty much anyone can find something they can afford, but also look up the mountain towards currently unachievable things. Collecting begets collecting, once you get your first couple cards pepe mania hits. You can never have enough.Lindy effecttheory about life expectancy of certain technologies or ideas
