decentralize and fix CA system - done
-
the challenge is integrating it with existing DNS, there's a tough one
-
or replacing it, even tougher
-
most people resort to dismissive replies, indeed
-
bottom line - the problems are real, and the ideas are valid
-
DSN was a great thing, but there are enormous problems
-
MITM attacks alone are a severe issue
-
mostly caused by this screwy CA system
-
true but unrelated, again running away from logical argument
-
MG writing a novel
-
well while we wait, here's a great example of MITM attack caused by current CA system: Gov't of France caught in 2013 MITM'ing French gmail users by forging gmail certs. This happens a lot, it's almost impossible to catch. Only Google and Microsoft can catch it, since they have both the browser and the CA hat signs certs for major sites.
-
the chrome brwser knew the forged certs weren't right, even though they were valid (signed by trusted CA)
-
Nope, the hosting itself is p2p ewuovalent og github pages more or less.. but the domains aren't friendly.. so the idea is users will run a modified beaker browser that's built with a resolver inside which queries coounterparty nodes & users just to use the data field in the counterparty asset description as a placeholder for the DAT public keys, so name resolution can be a "vanity" easy to remember address instead of a long public key.
e.g. you register the asset BITCORN and then you just have to type in bitcorn into beaker to load bitcorns p2p webspace. Or bitcorn.crops if you wanted to use your own subasset as a namespace etc
Coin Prism is no more, namecoin is more or less expired. I think the notion of being able to register a domain the same way as you would an asset using counterparty, secured by the blockchain is something that makes sense and would provide an extra use case. Especially when you consider the fact people can seamlessly trade their domains on the Dex, access control to sites can be configured by means of tokens/signatures and all that other lovely decentralized empowering stuff.
I for one would get involved buying/trading assets more regularly if I could point them to something and if others were doing the same -
tech solutions work, political ones don't
-
government WAS th eproblem in that case
-
lol, I'm doing the old illuminated phone balancing precariously above the head trick. Not the fastest keyboard tapper out there
-
oh geez, I'm gonna read all this now ..... gimme a while
-
https://blockstack.org/faq Here is another alternative with a few novel ideas in a similar veign (rose from NMC's ashes) and cites counterparty in the whitepaperBlockstack FAQs
Blockstack Network documentation
-
Yeah sounds like the same solution from 2010 namecoin. It's not dead, or expired, or taken over or whatever else you're suggesting. How's this something new?
-
Also how big is the CP description field? Big enough for public keys? (I have no idea)
-
So I'm implying that it'll be the same solution, with the same challenges waiting to be solved.
-
namely, how to get Joe Mainstreet to be able to resolve your domain name and get to your site?
-
Yeah actually I think this guy Greg came up with a terrific solution. A lightweight DSN resolver that queried DNS blockchains first, then handed off the query to a legacy resolver if it was a conventional name. The idea is to run this on routers, since pretty much everyone has one. DNSChain is the name of it.
-
https://blog.acolyer.org/2018/02/07/blockstack-a-global-naming-and-storage-system-secured-by-blockchain/ Here is a quick summary of some of the issues surrounding NMC and why there was movement away from it. (I support namecoin and have for a while, I beleive it was one of the first with a tangible value proposition) but there are valid concerns with it at this point
-
I did some of th etech writing for that one, had one running for a while too, but he failed to get traction for his idea and kinda went down this other lunatic fringe path.
-
Yes, barely though
-
I'm very familiar with the problems of Namecoin - 99% political, just exactly like the problems of Counterparty.
-
Also they stopped development work becasue they ran out of money. Emercoin really extended all their ideas, but still faces the integration problem.
-
Same as all the other decentralized webs, either via a custom browser, plugin, or a public gateway like IPFS which obviously would nullify a lot of the point
-
That's a problem then - the key size will need to continue to grow in the near term.
-
Yup, was sad to see NMC decline. Onename are fairly well funded though are they not?
-
Exactly - all of these face the last mile problem. DNSChain had a great solution, just need a router mfg to get onboard and the founder to stay sane for a while.
-
no comment on Onename
-
we really are waaaaaaaay off topic for this chat tho, luckily Dan's being very patient
-
All these CJDNs and the likes were trying the same thing half baked custom router fws for some kinda meshnet
-
DNSChain server does local RPC calls to blockchains running on same box, then queries other known DNSChain servers to resolve blockchain names, hands ff to powerDNS or other resolver for reggular names. Really works well too.
-
Yeah oops, my bad for starting the snowball, wasn't really trying too talk about DNS originally just curious to see whether assets could be seperately parsed and ehrthet there was any clear. notion of seperate 'classes' of assets in the XCP ecosystem that could be ID'd
-
Interesting. Not looked too heavily into that so far
-
Solves both censorship and MITM issues. 👍
-
The Namecoin lead dev has a different idea how to solve. He worked on browser plugins until he realized mass adoption was a pipedream. Now he works toward another funky solution, but I like this better. DNSChain running on home/office routers - bingo!
-
Wonder if you could port a kind of dnschain lite to a drivechain
-
No idea about drivechain.
-
I'm also skeptical of this taking off outside of fringe fanatics and the curious but it's a fascinating thing to explore
-
I should spin up a dnschain server again and point my machine to it. I still like the idea, but had a fallingout with the guy because he became some 911 denier evangelist.
-
Lol. Yeah need that incentive and critical mass to attract and he's probably not doing any favors with that kind of attitude
-
He was a cool guh for the longest, he went to school with Aaron Swartz and that's what got him started doing comp security, but he kinda lost it after he moved to San Fran.
-
Happens to the best of them
-
Or so I've heard
-
Yeah paranoia is hard to deal with.
-
would say I agree with you but not sure I trust you 😁
-
Me and Dante did one episode podcast about blockchain-based DNS in 2014, but it sucked, so we never kept going - had Oleg the lead dev from Emercoin interview too, but his accent too thick to grok what he says.
-
I had a lot I wanted to say about it, wrote some articles and shit too, but eventually got tired of evangelizing this.
-
I heard youtube has made some strides in it's auto subtitling. Might be worth trying to give that a whirl and seeing if he had some gems
-
Yeah check out emercoin's DNS, they really extended eery single idea namecoin had, and fixed a lot of the shortcomings.
-
I tried to get involved later on with some startup effort to do DNS on Bitshares too, but that was DOA. Larimer had no clue what the problems with DNS were and how to fix them.
-
yeah I have some protoshares laying around I never converted
-
Larimer is convinced the problem with DNS is domain squatting, plain and simple. Opena and shut case.
-
Censorship, fine. Security - what me worry?
-
Tried it a while back and got nowhere, you need to convert using an old client and then again- quite a convoluted process which ultimately didn't end up working
-
Squatters gonna squat, I'd argue it's a net positive but each to their own.
-
I don't thinkit's a problem either. You can do things to alleviate to - as Emercoin did. In earliest few days it cost a fortune to register a domain.
-
ADN in the firs tweek, if memory serves there were limits on the duration of the registration.
-
But Larimer wanted some convoluted auction system for every name. It was crazy complicated, like everything he builds.
-
Will have to properly look into emercoin since I haven't yet. Sounds interesting though, not sure how I missed it
-
They used better TLDs too - .coin
-
I should renew some of mine for shits n grins. Nobody can resolve them tho.
-
I still ue that chain for timestamping/notarization.
-
Just did that last week.
-
Why not btc, purely for the permanence?
-
clearsigned some project notes i have by PGP, then inserted hashes into emercoin chain in a format I evangelized on Namecoin forums back in the day.
-
this is cheaper, I have lots of old stuff already there and this guy is my friend :)
-
Ah fair enough, I wonder sometimes about all these myriad forgotten ghost chains and semi abandoned projects whether there's gonna be some kind of museum, forensic archaelogy digging out the remnants of the chains
-
basically free for me, cause in the first days, you had to get Emercoins from Oleg. I sent him $10 of BTC and he sent me thousands of them. I wasted half, then this year I went back and looked and still had half of them LOL
-
They went on to do other stuff, likemgmt of SSH keys, now they have built a system to map VOIP numbers to Emercoin addresses.
-
like DNS for VOIP
-
They have a guy on the team who is an expert in STUN protocol, so...
-
Using CP for DNS sounds intruiging tho - I wonder how feasible it really is?
-
I dont know much about Counterparty.
-
That's pretty cool still. Hope they can find a niche and market the solution as some kind of service or enterprise solution because that's probably the best chance they have of it stickking round in the public eye now that nowadays its all about marketing and flashy deals and getting that sweet liquidity for a project to thrive and not just survive
-
Would be super easy. Simply make a DAT site or clone an existing DAT site like you'd clone a git repo, then register an asset (domain) of your choice then paste the public key in the description field
-
Yeha we'll see. They have money from some deal they signed wth Microsoft, and they just signed some nice deals too that he was trying to tell me about. But yeah they still search for the killer app.
-
Then you'd have a resolver which queries a counterpartyd for that name and returns the public key, that's the most amateur and simple version I could think of as a demo
-
user would have to be running a custom browser or plugin of course however
-
It should be easy to modify DNSchain to ask a CP server about those domain names too. Assuming there's a RPC interface available (no idea)
-
you could negate that if you resolved asset names to standard IP's but of course theirs less point in that
-
what is the interface to talk to CP server?
-
On DNschain or XCP you mean?
-
There is an RPC iface
-
yeah get the server to resolve queries by interrogating a local CP server
-
oh cool
-
that's how it's currently built, so shouldn't be too hard
-
I like the system of assets in counterparty although I haven't played much with the daemons, they kind of just work
-
same here, the tech is nice, but I dont know much about it
-
And then you have the dex, permitting a third party market for people to trade those assets (or domains if you see them like that) directly p2p
-
yeah, you'd get that for free
-
Pretty elegant when you compare the current market for trying to purchase/trade/sell a domain
-
yep
-
Not that it'll ever take off but it's nice to dream
-
IMO the dex was one of counterparties chief innovations & stepped in to save people from the kind of goxxing that was rampant when you hold your private keys on a centralized service, but XCP hasn't as much liquidity as BTC and paying with BTC is a bit slow and clunky
-
Years later and there's a lot of hype about decentralised exchanges, especially building on ETH, they have the advantage of being able to wrap ETH to a natiive ERC-20 token and interacting with a more liquid ecosystem but none of them have truly taken off either
-
yeah hundreds of projects to build DEX
-
those solidity contracts are a dream come true for malicious hackers
-
Yeah I've heard
-
are you planning to pursue this?
-
yeah I'd like to but I haven't got the skill or time to do it myself, I'd like to get the idea out there if some people agree to it, then I'm open to contribute funding and what little I can. I think it would be beneficial even if it doesn't go that far.. but we should prob leave our in depth ramblings to the main counterparty chat if anywhere and let this be the lush fields of virtual crops and crypto collectibles that it is supposed to be
-
agree - way too much pollution of the Bitcorn chat

I'm also getting bombarded lately.
-
I average about 5 per day
-
Did you buy a domain recently?
-
The day after i bought a few and didn't do the privacy I got 15+ all from india wanting to build me a website
-
Totally ICANN's fault. Many folks including me have been fighting for years to get them to allow registrations with no accuracy requirements for domain registrations. Technically they can confiscate domains that don't comply - and have been pushing to require a 5th contact which would include a street address and working phone number. Fine for big companes who have legal officers for this. Luckily this horrible GDPR has taken care of their requirements for publishing PII.
-
Spammers have surfed the WHOIS data for years, a very rich source of targets.
-
yet another reason for blockchain-based DNS
-
I keep my whois private and still get 15 calls a day
-
Private registration's often the best option unless the domain is valuable. It's problematic because the actual registrant is the privacy company, you're just an entry in a database, and these things do get stolen fairly often. Similar to keeping coins on an exchange - you really only have an account balance/IOU.
-
good point tho - this is not the main source of robocalls, it's a source of email spam, domain theft
-
Did bitcorn update their privacy policy, too?
-
-
