It is confusing, and we're still working it out... A lot of stuff happening is an experiment and the market is definitely still figuring out what to value what. Based on my experience thus far I'd say a subset of collectors is more interested in the timestamp than the artwork.
I was selling tokens before attaching images to them... people want in on a part of verifiable Dogecoin history.
For ANY token (unless the image data is actually embedded in the blockchain), the image can be changed. The problem is how the token is marketed. If somebody lies about the art also being old, then they're a liar, and unfortunately there's a lot of them in the crypto space. -
So the manipulation (or perceived manipulation) isn't a new problem... and the eagle eye collectors will see through that.

Well, one reason I believe would be that it was really cheap (still is) and fast -
I can't really speak for Rare Pepes. The thing is, every change to the token description is recorded on the blockchain, so you can also see what it once was. I believe the asset owner can change the description (and therefore image) at will, but whatever they change it to doesn't delete the record of how it once was. Does that make sense?

What happened was the servers that the wallet depended on used to go down a lot. The Dogeparty web wallet wallet was consistently plagued with problems back then

Poloniex did put up XDP for trade and kept it up long after the servers went down. Wonder if they held their balances.

At the time of the Bern, which started Aug 13 2014, there were 10 billion DOGE in circulation. 1.3 BILLION of them were sent to the burn address... pretty astounding. that's 13% of the whole supply
