    Hello!

Thank you for all of your hard work in bringing the next generation counterparty to the world.

I know this is uncomfortable to hear, but this is one of the reasons that counterparty has been stuck in "garage band" mode for the past decade. I am not knowledgeable enough to propose specific solutions, but the user experience needs to be improved in a way that eliminates these problems.

The current transactional structure of counterparty requires 3-4 on chain transactions between two individuals to trustlessly swap a counterparty asset for btc
  • @herpenstein #231041 09:02 PM, 24 Feb 2024
These transactions require the coordination of two users. the transactions also have time constraints. the user interfaces to perform these swaps in a smooth consistent manner is difficult
  • @herpenstein #231042 09:04 PM, 24 Feb 2024
Dispensers require you to trust the counterparty, but are popular because of the simplicity.
  • @herpenstein #231043 09:05 PM, 24 Feb 2024
A new type of transaction structure is possible that allows swaps of counterparty assets for BTC in a single transaction, but it would require updates to the counterparty protocol.

The discussion talks a lot about ordinals because this is something ordinals has done exceptionally well, and I think adding this feature to counterparty is a huge benefit to the ecosystem
  • @978879797 ↶ Reply to #231041 #231046 09:08 PM, 24 Feb 2024
    Thanks man.

I'm sure you can see, this is not the way it should be. To quote your descriptions (which sound accurate):

*The current transactional structure of counterparty requires 3-4 on chain transactions between two individuals to trustlessly swap a counterparty asset for btc

*These transactions require the coordination of two users.

*Dispensers require you to trust the counterparty

I am sure you would agree, this is not the way it was supposed to be (according to Satoshi Nakamoto, who created Bitcoin, and upon which CP is built).

*A new type of transaction structure is possible

    Let's get that going!!
  • @XCERXCP ↶ Reply to #231044 #231047 09:24 PM, 24 Feb 2024
So a counterparty asset can both be a CP asset or an Ordinal.

Move it to the Oridinal ecosystem or back to CP.

While an ordinal can only ever be an Oridnal and not have the ability to take advantage of the CP ecosystem.
  • @XCERXCP #231048 09:28 PM, 24 Feb 2024
With the extended functionality that’s possible with CP vs Ordinals, it sounds like it would be better to start your asset issuance on CP to be able to take advantage of both ecosystem benefits.
  • @Niftyboss1 ↶ Reply to #231046 #231049 09:58 PM, 24 Feb 2024
I think we all agree and understand what the current issues are, and for the first time in many years we can actually expect major progress in many of those areas, so things have never looked better for Counterparty IMHO
  • @herpenstein ↶ Reply to #231047 #231050 10:18 PM, 24 Feb 2024
The asset would not be an ordinal. It would be attached to a UTXO, allowing us to use the same transactional structure that ordinals use.

    Yes
  • @6370143984 #231063 06:37 PM, 25 Feb 2024
in any case, the working theory is that dispenser closing delays (intro'd in 9.61 and activated @ 819300) wrecked performance. I believe this is independent of any issues that allowing dispenses for more than one vout causes (which it turns out is not easily addressed because dispensing addresses can call dispensers...).

FWIW though it's too early to give specific numbers, we should see a very large speedup in catch-up with the next release.

"link your metadata however you want" is not the W you think it is. Lack of standardization has held Counterparty back in my view. More choice != better. Standardization is important otherwise you end up with bit-rot and a huge reliance on centralized services. For instance, try and spin-up a Counterparty node today without crawling Xchain APIs, and see how far you get with all the images matching the tokens. Most of Rare Pepes will be blank.

ANN hotfix release of counterparty-lib v9.61.2
This release fixes three critical bugs that can disrupt the network:
    * Integer overflow in dispensers
    * Invalide broadcasts with malformed text
    * Bad logging for destructions with an invalid asset

    https://github.com/CounterpartyXCP/counterparty-lib/releases/tag/untagged-d7002d440f94bfcee202

Making this release because the next real version, v10.0.0, is going to take another few weeks to come out. Hoping to have v10.0.0-alpha out in a week or so, however. To track what we're working on for that release, see the GitHub milestone: https://github.com/CounterpartyXCP/counterparty-lib/milestone/12

Apologies for the inquisitiveness, but what is the reason the 2000 XCP batches are offered OTC rather than in verified dispensers?
  • @978879797 ↶ Reply to #231136 #231153 02:29 AM, 29 Feb 2024
Bitcoin is over a trillion now.

CP could potentially add a wide range of functions/capabilities/values to BTC.

If we value the functionality that XCP adds to BTC at 1% of BTC's value, then XCP should have a market cap of $10 billion.

If we value the functionality that XCP adds to BTC at 3% of BTC's value, then XCP should have a market cap of $30 billion.

At an XCP market cap of $30 billion ——

$30,000,000,000 div. by 2,600,000 XCP = roughly $11,500 per XCP

    Dream big fam.......

  • @al_fernandz #231444 12:57 PM, 29 Feb 2024
It will only dispense the available amount
  • @al_fernandz #231445 12:57 PM, 29 Feb 2024
dispensers cannot refund or take partial payments
  • @Niftyboss1 #231446 01:00 PM, 29 Feb 2024
Yes that's a known problem with dispensers... Always double-check how much is remaining in the dispenser before sending BTC

Please explain... you send a payment of 0.1BTC +fee... I can buy the entire dispenser with mega high miner fee, and you will lose the 0.1 and get no assets in return
  • @MrCoins #231470 05:09 PM, 29 Feb 2024
The only way to solve this is to have dispensers payout by timestamp or tx broadcast so there is an order based on time and not feee
  • @benchbtc #231471 05:10 PM, 29 Feb 2024
my understanding is unconfirmed transactions cannot be 'time stamped' persay as there is not 1 single mempool. each node recieves broacasted transactions at different time points after broadcast
  • @benchbtc #231472 05:10 PM, 29 Feb 2024
    but i could be wrong
  • @MrCoins #231473 05:11 PM, 29 Feb 2024
Yes that is somewhat correct, but you could timestamp them based on when a "selected" node sees them
  • @6370143984 #231474 05:11 PM, 29 Feb 2024
you cannot fix the trust problems in dispensers totally. What you can do is make it prohibitively expensive for dispensers to rug buyers. Doing so would kill liquidity, however.
  • @MrCoins #231475 05:11 PM, 29 Feb 2024
However this still isn't 100% for the reason you mentioned and when I got rugged it was a bot that sent a tx within 5seconds of mine with a much higher fee

It's also worth noting, that even the rip-off of Counterparty's PEPECASH token (the ETH based PEPE) has a market cap today of over $1 Billion.

    https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/pepe/

    Absolutely absurd.

One day, the market will sort this all out, hopefully with a much higher valuation for XCP, the real PEPECASH, and rarepepes in general.
